  Home>> Regulation
Operating a beauty salon isn't as relaxing as visiting one. Many rules and regulations apply to the industry to ensure safety, responsible business practices and compliance with the law. Rules and regulations depend on what type of beauty salon you're operating and where your business is located, as they are set by state boards and city codes. The rules for hair salons are different than those for nail salons.Licensed Employees. To ensure that your clients receive the best service, make sure your employees have the proper education and training to be qualified at their trade. Most states require beauty school graduates to pass an exam and earn a license to practice in their profession. These rules vary by state, so be aware of the requirements of your state so you can employ the most qualified candidates..Sanitation must be a top priority for a beauty salon to meet industry and client cleanliness standards. Many bacteria can be found in salons, making certain sanitation practices standard for all types of beauty salons. Every product, appliance or tool that comes in contact with a client must be disinfected and sanitized. For example, combs and brushes must be kept in a mixture of equal parts barbicide and water, a disinfectant liquid, between uses. Employees must follow basic practices such as washing towels, cleaning sinks and floors and washing hands. Most states issue informational documents to salon businesses to guide them in keeping their facilities sanitary and healthy.Business License.Your business must obtain the proper licenses and certificates to meet legal standards. When opening or operating a spa, you must get all the licenses required by your state. These may include a cosmetologist license, health inspection certification, building code compliance certification, business owner license and individual employee licenses. Requirements change frequently, so salon owners must stay abreast of state and local regulations.Hazardous Chemical Management. Many chemicals in hair and nail salons are hazardous to the health of clients and employees if improperly used or stored, and all chemicals should be assumed to pose a risk of exposure. No chemical mixes, such as hair dye, should be left unattended, and any chemical spillage should be dealt with immediately. Salons should develop a protocol for how to efficiently dispose of aerosols, chemical waste, glass, other sharp objects and recyclable containers, and all employees should be trained in this protocol. Standardized protocols enable government regulators to assess which salons are, and are not, meeting proper standards.
